An aerator will certainly benefit your lawn by removing unwanted thatch from the grass and loosening it, which will result in a denser lawn. A healthy lawn needs sufficient nutrients, air, water and sunlight for its growth. However, with regular mowing, grass clippings get into the lawn, which can create an impermeable layer through decomposition. This layer not only prevents the access of air and nutrients to the soil, but is also ideal for the growth of fungi and moulds, which are not desirable for a healthy and beautiful lawn. Therefore, it is advisable to scarify and aerate the lawn from time to time. Scarification (vertikutace) is recommended twice a year, first in spring and again in autumn. The scarifying roller removes thatch, plant residues and weeds from the lawn and cuts through the top layer of soil. This improves the intake of nutrients, moisture and air and promotes deeper rooting of the grass. At the same time, grass runners are cut through, which promotes the formation of new shoots and the lawn thus thickens and rejuvenates. Aeration (aerifikace) is recommended for the rest of the season. It gently breaks up compacted soil, combs out mowing residues and other impurities from the grass, thereby removing the impermeable crust of old growth and improving the exchange of soil gases and moisture intake.
